The prevalence of caste mentality within the Church in India is self-evident and wellknown. The faithful attend church, pray together, sing together, partake in the Communion together. Yet, an exclusionary mindset is apparent in relational and material realms. In certain places, caste origin drives a wedge between the faithful.
The brotherhood experienced and celebrated in the Eucharistic table fellowship does not extend to household table fellowship. The one who is a brother or a sister in the church becomes ‘higher’ or ‘lower’ caste in the society. The boy or girl who sings well in the church, becomes ‘unfit’ if his or her name is proposed for a leadership role. Similar trends surface in civil life as well. People travel by the same bus or train, shop at the same places, and gather in thousands for festivals. They greet each other and worship God at the same temple. All these occur as long as the caste origin of the interlocuter is unknown. Once revealed, ‘Covid-time physical distance’ is manifest in words and actions.
