Dress codes provide privileged access to the social, cultural and economic fabric of past societies. As part of non-verbal communication within a shared normative system, they play a key role in constructing individual and collective identities through their materiality (shape, texture, and colour) and the context in which they are worn. As realia clothing has largely disappeared, images are among the main sources of information available. A red-figured Apulian column-krater attributed to the York Painter, dated c. 380‑370 BCE and held at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale Jatta in Ruvo di Puglia, provides an original depiction of an Oscan warrior departing or returning in the presence of a woman and a young child, himself dressed in an Italic costume. Based on this recontextualized case study (production, reception, uses), which evokes the family sphere through the semantics of gesturality and the iconography of the warrior, this article explores the use of clothing as a marker of identity in relation to different age and gender groups. It also considers the processes involved in the formation of images and imaginaries by examining the possible re-elaboration of Attic figurative schemes for non-Greek customers in southern Italy.
