English There is a growing consensus that companies must assume environmental and social responsibilities, such as reducing carbon emissions and contributing to social welfare. As the business environment evolves, the competencies required of graduates must evolve as well. Higher business education therefore plays a crucial role in preparing future leaders by integrating Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) content, competencies, and teaching methods into curricula and classroom practice. This thesis examines the development of new competencies in higher business education in response to these changes and explores the role of higher business education institutions in this transformation. It addresses four research objectives, structured into four parts of the monograph. The first part provides an overview of CSR through a systematic literature review, identifying thematic and methodological clusters and synthesizing them into six CSR dimensions that establish a foundation for curriculum development. The second part examines CSR teaching in higher business education and identifies seven key dimensions of CSR teaching. An empirical study on Alternative Credentials across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland reveals that integrating social and meta-competencies remains challenging. The third part presents an exploratory phenomenological study based on semi-structured interviews with Swiss CSR teaching staff and course coordinators. It examines CSR content, teaching methods, target competencies, and perceived challenges, identifying five categories related to students, competencies, course content, teaching methods, and institutional conditions. Finally, the fourth part develops recommendations for higher education institutions and teaching staff, based on two expert focus groups, to strengthen CSR teaching and prepare leaders for responsible management.
