Introduction: Bringing Religion Home

This short essay introduces a special issue on domestic religious objects and the comparative study of “domestication” – our designator for the processes through which families and individuals bring religious items into the home. Six scholars of religion from different disciplinary backgrounds will examine religious objects within contemporary and historical homes, in order to shed light on the dynamic and contextual selection and transformation processes. Together with the “in conversation” section following our articles, these contributions build upon current studies of lived religion, material religion, and domestication studies in the field of media and technology to bring forth new methodological angles through which to study the materiality of religion at home(s).
