This research investigates the (e)valuation of work in Cuba after the 1959 revolution up to 2020, where 'egalitarian' state wages have coexisted with a growing reliance on non-state sectors and informal work, exacerbated by economic crises and scarcity. Drawing on various theoretical and methodological perspectives, the qualitative case study examines the discourses, dispositifs, and individual perceptions and strategies in the Cuban realm of work. Based on the analysis of documents, interviews, and an online survey, it explores definitions and (e)valuations of work, related principles and notions of justice, and individual modes of subjectification. The findings show that the Cuban context reflects both unique features and parallels with other contexts. The Cuban wage structure and the related metaphor of the ‘inverted pyramid’, a central interpretive pattern in discourses on the Cuban realm of work, represent Cuban idiosyncrasies while also pointing to the prevalence of the equity principle as observed in other contexts. At the same time, the data illustrate how other principles and related patterns of argumentation also play a role in discourses and dispositifs of distributive justice. Indeed, these principles are not necessarily mutually exclusive, but often compatible. Furthermore, the study highlights how Cuban workers navigate notions of justice and other discursive patterns discourses in subjectification processes. The research contributes to the broader field of work (e)valuation and distributive justice by examining the Cuban case with its specific historical, political and socio-economic characteristics, thus offering new insights into issues of discursive patterns, principles of justice and modes of subjectification.
