English This doctoral thesis investigates the incorporation of philosophy into management learning and challenges the widely held belief that the two areas are incompatible. Historically, most managers have shown little interest towards studying philosophy. However, there is an increasing number of programs that blend both worlds along with a growing body of research defending this approach. After decades of poorly-adapted teaching and training methods in business, literature has taken under consideration some alternative approaches to management learning. Various academics advocate for non-business subjects in business curricula and recommend turning to more humanistic subjects such as history, arts, theology and philosophy. They believe the classics have the potential to further develop a wider range of competencies including communication, leadership and ethical thinking. Yet there is wide disagreement about this proposal; numerous managers and management scholars are skeptical about philosophy. It is perceived as being complicated, abstract, aimless, and it is unclear how it might add value to business. This dissertation attempts to clarify the use and benefits of philosophy in management. Four distinct empirical studies strive to understand what philosophy for management consists of and how it is defined. By analyzing the aims of existing programs and the experiences of managers who took part in philosophical training, they also investigate the potential impact of philosophical learning on current or future managers.
