Syria at War : Reshuffling the Cards
BFD
English
After the first protests on March 15, 2011, the Syrian conflict went through multiple phases. One of the most significant ones happened on November 27, 2024, when HTS launched its Operation “Deterrence of Aggression” that put an end to the al-Assad regime. Since then, the cards have been reshuffled: Russia and Iran lost most of their influence, the transitional government controls most of the country except for the Druze and Kurdish controlled areas, and Türkiye now has a neighbor whose government is sympathetic to them. In the south, Israel occupies even more ter-ritory. This article first recounts what happened during HTS’s operation and how this happened in the first place. Then, it analyzes the main actors’ different preferences, influencing one another, and thus complicating a peaceful solution to the conflict.
