English French This paper deals with French verbs that are morphologically related to stuff-denoting nouns (e.g. beurrer ‘butter’, saigner ‘bleed’, caraméliser ‘caramelize’, ensabler ‘sand up’), and how these ‘stuff’ verbs (SVs) semantically derive from the corresponding nouns (SNs). First the criteria for identifying SNs are determined. SNs are defined as concrete non-collective mass nouns, i.e. nouns that denote homeomerous and non-intrinsically bounded spatial entities. The affixation and conversion system used to create SVs is then detailed, and a typology of SVs is proposed. It appears that the processes denoted by SVs mainly consist in spreading, producing, transforming or putting into. SNs can be part of the semantics of SVs as referential elements, in which case they correspond to an incorporated semantic role, or they can be predicative elements, and then recategorize an argument of the verb. Cet article est consacré aux verbes liés morphologiquement à des noms de matière, tels que beurrer, saigner, caraméliser, ensabler. Nous nous interrogeons sur l’élaboration sémantique de ces verbes (Vmat) à partir des noms de matière correspondants (Nmat). Nous revenons d’abord sur les critères d’identification des Nmat, et les définissons comme des noms d’objet massifs non collectifs, dénotant des entités spatiales homéomères et non délimitées intrinsèquement. Nous détaillons ensuite les différents procédés morphologiques en jeu dans la construction des Vmat (affixation et conversion), et proposons une ébauche de classification sémantique de ces verbes. Les procès décrits expriment principalement la dispersion, la production, la transformation ou l’immersion. Les Nmat peuvent intervenir dans la composition sémantique des Vmat en tant qu’éléments référentiels, remplissant un rôle thématique intégré, ou en tant qu’éléments prédicatifs, permettant de recatégoriser un argument du verbe.
