English French German In Switzerland, the religious landscape has considerably changed in the past decades towards a significant diversity of religious and non-religious people. On the educational level, this situation has resulted by the introduction of new school subjects in the curriculum, among which the subject “ethics and religious cultures” – éthique et cultures religieuses – (ERC) in the French speaking part of the country. Working from the actors’ discourses gathered via interviews, this article focuses on the conceptions of religious diversity held by primary school teachers in the cantons of Fribourg, Vaud and Valais in their professional context and analyzes how these conceptions impact the way the teachers approach the ERC subject. We observe, among other things, that for most teachers the relevance of ERC teaching (in terms of usefulness and interest) and the presence of a certain diversity (religious and of origins) within the students are tightly linked. Our analyses also show that the conception of diversity held by the teachers influences the way they perceive and deal with the diversity present in the classroom. For some, diversity represents challenges – more or less inconvenient on a social and professional level, for others it represents a rich learning opportunity. Also, we found that the teachers’ conceptions of religious diversity influence the way they address their students when teaching ERC.
