Le commedie di Luigi Groto : Questioni di datazione, rapporto con le fonti latine e volgari

Luigi Groto (1541 - 1585), known as “il Cieco d’Adria”, was a prolific
and eclectic dramatist. His production includes tragedies, pastoral tales,
sacred dramas and comedies. The paper presents the first results of the
project that will lead to the critical and commented edition of the three
comedies Emilia, Tesoro and Alteria. The first part of the paper settles some
problems regarding the date of composition of the works, crossreferencing the data coming from dedicatory letters in the printed editions
and from the author’s Lettere Familiari. The second part studies the Latin
and vulgar sources of the comedies. Here, the three works and the figure
of Groto will be contextualized in the path of a renewal of the comic
genre between the 16th and 17th centuries. For Tesoro and Alteria, the focus is on Groto’s debt to Giraldi’s novels, but also, unexpectedly, to Giraldi’s tragedies. Luigi Groto (1541 - 1585), detto “il Cieco d’Adria”, fu autore teatrale
prolifico ed eclettico: la sua produzione include tragedie, favole pastorali,
drammi sacri e commedie. L’articolo presenta i primi risultati del progetto che si concluderà con l’edizione critica e commentata delle tre commedie Emilia, Tesoro e Alteria. Nella prima parte si precisano alcune questioni riguardanti il periodo di composizione delle opere, incrociando i
dati provenienti dalle lettere dedicatorie anteposte alle stampe e dalle Lettere Famigliari dell’autore. Nella seconda si studiano le fonti latine e volgari delle commedie, allo scopo di inquadrare i tre testi e la figura di Groto
nel percorso di rinnovamento degli stilemi del genere comico nel valico
tra Cinque e Seicento. In particolare, soprattutto per Tesoro ed Alteria, si
indagherà il debito di Groto nei confronti del Giraldi novellista, ma anche, inaspettatamente, del Giraldi tragico.
