Revisiting the Semantic Concept of Culture from the Perspective of Cultural Studies

English Reflecting on the notion of culture is at the centre of the Germanic discourse on the approach to cultural diversity. While the contemporary understanding of the term is currently being vividly discussed, the corresponding epistemological prem-ises are often neglected. Consequently, one runs the risk of having an essentialist understanding of culture. This text, therefore, first discusses the semantic concept of culture (bedeutungsorientierter Kulturbegriff) with a music pedagogical imprint and then from the perspective of cultural studies. The paper concludes with a plea to rethink the approach and the attitude towards cultural diversity in music les-sons.
