English While books like Isaiah, Ezra-Nehemiah and Chronicles include the accession of Cyrus to power in God’s plan for his people, the book of Malachi keeps its distance from the Persian empire. The reading of Malachi 1:6-14 shows that the author was sensitive to Persian propaganda ; he subtly preached against it. Besides the restauration of worthy cultic rites, the main goal of this passage is to assert that the true great king is YHWH Seba’ot, not the Persian king. Thus, Malachi 1:11.14 should be interpreted as an affirmation of the present status of YHWH.
