The fragile world of optimization

English German The concept of economic optimization has a significant impact on education and the production of knowledge in the field of educational studies. To understand its effects on research, I will discuss three different shifts of the dominant perspective to demonstrate absences and rejections economic applications of optimization produce: First, the craftsman attitude cultivates a kind of optimization, which goes hand in hand with perfectionism and obsession. It finally destroys its benefit. Second, the reproductive work does not fit into the logic of optimization although political economy tries to transform it into productive labor. Third, the movement of Buen Vivir illustrates ways of existence and politics that reject the foundation of optimization: the principles of European modernity Wenn man die Folgen verstehen will, die mit der Einführung des ökonomischen Be-griffs „Optimierung“ in die erziehungswissenschaftliche Wissensproduktion verbunden sind, dann muss man die Verwerfungen und Grenzziehungen untersuchen, die dieser Begriff produziert. Eine dreifache Verschiebung der ökonomischen Perspektive soll dies leisten: Die erste Verschiebung bewahrt den Begriff der Optimierung, aber als eine Form der Obsession, die den Nutzen in das Gegenteil verkehrt. Die zweite Ver-schiebung behandelt die Arbeit der Reproduktion, die sich bei aller Anstrengung mo-derner ökonomischer Theorien nicht in Optimierungskalküle zwängen lässt. Die dritte Verschiebung geht noch einen Schritt weiter und problematisiert das Fundament des dominanten Optimierungsverständnisses: die Rationalität der europäischen Moderne
