English The present study on foreign language reading examines two different types of selfassessment data: on the one hand it relates global self-assessed reading competence of francophone and italophone readers of German to the results of a reading test as well as a placement test. On the other hand, participants’ indications about how confident they felt answering each comprehension question of the reading test are analysed. The study revealed that the majority of intermediate and advanced learners of German assessed their German reading competence one level below their overall German competence as measured by the placement test. Correlations between self-assessment and test results were moderate. Furthermore, our data reveal that learners’ confidence when answering reading comprehension questions increases on the higher levels of German competence and is correlated with the correctness of their answers. However, with regard to some very intricate reading items participants often fail to realise that a comprehension problem exists.
