English Infections of the nervous system are a common and serious occurrence. Neuroimaging has allowed to improve early detection and thus to initiate treatment earlier. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has become the method of choice in investigating a patient with suspicion of an infection of the central nervous system. Newer modalities such as MR spectroscopy and MR diffusion and perfusion will further help to improve diagnostic accuracy of the technique. For the investigation of infections of white matter, techniques such as diffusion imaging are essential.
