Here, we aim at determining the climatic factors that best explain the interannual variation in spring growth onset of alpine plants, and at examining whether photoperiod might limit their phenological response during exceptionally warm springs and early snowmelts. We analysed 17\u00a0years of data (1998-2014) from 35 automatic weather stations located in subalpine and alpine zones ranging from 1560 to 2450\u00a0m asl in the Swiss Alps. These stations are equipped with ultrasonic sensors for snow depth measurements that are also able to detect plant growth in spring and summer, giving a unique opportunity to analyse snow and climate effects on alpine plant phenology. Our analysis showed high phenological variation among years, with one exceptionally early and late spring, namely 2011 and 2013. Overall, the timing of snowmelt and the beginning of plant growth were tightly linked irrespective of the elevation of the station. Snowmelt date was the best predictor of plant growth onset with air temperature after snowmelt modulating the plants' development rate. The monitoring program aimed at understanding the rates of deformation over large, deep fractures encompassing South Peak and predicting a second large rock avalanche on the mountain. The monitoring program consisted of a complement of static ground points and remotely monitored targets measured periodically, and climatic, microseismic, and deformation data collected automatically on daily intervals and archived. In the late 1980s, developmental funding for the monitoring program ceased and some of the installations fell into disrepair. Between May 2004 and September 2006, readings from the remaining functional monitoring points were compiled and interpreted. In addition, readings compiled previously were re-interpreted based on a more recent understanding of short-term movement patterns and climatic influences. A dense distribution of source and receiver positions resulted in a small subsurface sampling of 1.5 m \u00d7 1.5 m and a high fold of &gt;40. Common processing operations that included pseudotrue amplitude scaling, deconvolution, and band\u2010pass filtering successfully enhanced shallow reflections relative to source\u2010generated noise. Careful top muting helped avoid erroneous stacking of direct and guided waves. Azimuth\u2010dependent velocity analyses proved to be unnecessary. Three\u2010dimensional (3-D) migration of the stacked data yielded the final high\u2010resolution images of the shallow subsurface (15\u2013170 m). Because most reflections and diffractions were migrated to their correct subsurface locations, confident interpretations of 3-D structures were possible. Time slices and cross\u2010sections along arbitrary directions proved to be powerful analysis tools. Even small\u2010scale features (&lt;20 m wide), such as subglacial channels and troughs, could be mapped. Five major lithologic units separated by four principal reflecting boundaries were distinguished on the basis of their characteristic seismic facies. The principal reflecting boundaries were semiautomatically tracked through the 3-D data volume. Borehole information allowed the uppermost boundary at 15\u201327 m to be identified as the top of a 68\u201380-m-thick sequence of basal and reworked tills characterized by high\u2010amplitude discontinuous to quasi\u2010continuous reflections. Low reflectivity of seismic units above and below the till units was associated with finely layered or massive glaciolacustrine clay/silt deposited during and after two principal phases of glaciation (W\u00fcrm at 28 000 to 10 000 and Riss at 200 000 to 100 000 years before the present). The model allows to handle the large-scale 3D structure of seventeen major crustal units of the belt (from the lower crust to the sedimentary cover nappes), and two main discontinuities (the Insubric line and the Crustal Penninic Front). It provides a unique document to better understand their structural relationships and to produce new sections. The study area comprises the western alpine arc, from the Jura to the Northwest, up to the Bergell granite intrusion and the Lepontine Dome to the East, and is limited to the South by the Ligurian basin. The model is limited vertically 10 km above sea level at the top, and the moho interface at the bottom. We discarded the structural relationships between the Alps sensus stricto and the surrounding geodynamic systems such as the Rhine graben or the connection with the Apennines. The 3D-model is based on the global integration of various data such as the DEM of the Alps, the moho isobaths, the simplified geological and tectonic maps of the belt, the crustal cross-sections ECORS-CROP and NFP-20, and complementary cross-sections specifically built to precise local complexities. The database has first been integrated in a GIS-project to prepare their implementation in the GeoModeller, by homogenizing the different spatial referencing systems. The global model is finally interpolated from all these data, using the potential field method. Until now this breed is not listed as a predisposed breed for idiopathic epilepsy. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of idiopathic epilepsy in Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs in Switzerland and to describe the clinical characteristics of epilepsy in this breed including seizures semiology and response to treatment. Material and Methods: Records of the Swiss Kennel Club for Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs were searched for reported cases of epileptic seizures between 1999-2019. The total number of reported cases and the signalment was reviewed. Furthermore, all owners of Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs registered to the breeding club were invited to complete an online questionnaire. Results: In total 600 Greater Swiss Mountain Dog's live in Switzerland: 70-90 puppies are born each year. Between 1999 and 2019 34 dogs (2%) were announced with seizures. Of the 400 owners invited to answer the questionnaire 128 completed the questionnaire. 20 of these 128 dogs were suffering from idiopathic epilepsy. The prevalence for idiopathic epilepsy based on the questionnaire was therefore 15,6%. All affected dogs showed generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Cluster seizures and status epilepticus occurred in 5 (41,6%) and 6 (50%) of the dogs. Long term seizure control was only achieved in 10% of the dogs. Five dogs (25%) died or were euthanized because of insufficient seizure control. Only one dog (5%) showed clinical remission. Conclusion: Prevalence of idiopathic epilepsy is higher in Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs in Switzerland compared to the general dog population. The usual symptoms of acute mountain sickness are headache, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, lassitude, dizziness and ataxia. High altitude cerebral oedema is a severe state of acute mountain sickness with, in addition, alteration of mental status and consciousness. The pathophysiology of these 2 diseases are essentially due to an increase of intracranial pressure directly dependent of an increase of cerebral volume. Molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying acute mountain sickness and high altitude cerebral oedema are still poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the supply and demand of veterinary services for cattle and pigs through a representative survey of veterinarians and farmers. The results revealed that the veterinary farm animal service was rated by the majority of both, farmers and veterinarians, to be good or very good. Veterinary service shortages exist partly in mountain and peripheral regions, in small areas in otherwise well-served regions and in the canton of Ticino. By contrast, about one third of farm animal practices are rather underutilized and would prefer to increase livestock numbers. The emergency service is currently very well guaranteed. Ninety-five percent of veterinarians and farmers stated that on-site emergency service is provided within an hour or less. The quality of veterinary services were also assessed positively by the farmers. While a third of respondents said veterinary care improved compared to five years ago, only two percent felt that veterinary care had deteriorated. Almost all veterinarians stated that vacancies in farm animal practices were difficult to fill adequately. The majority of practice owners do not receive enough applications from suitable candidates. In addition, the majority of applicants were not trained in Switzerland. The security of farm animal veterinary service is currently mostly good to very well guaranteed. However, the regional response of terrestrial ecosystems and the services that they provide under such a scenario are largely unknown. We focus on mountain forests in the European Alps and evaluate how a range of ecosystem services (ES) are projected to be impacted in a 2\u00a0\u00b0C warmer world, using four novel regional climate scenarios. We employ three complementary forest models to assess a wide range of ES in two climatically contrasting case study regions. Within each climate scenario we evaluate if and when ES will deviate beyond status quo boundaries that are based on current system variability. Our results suggest that the sensitivity of mountain forest ES to a 2\u00a0\u00b0C warmer world depends heavily on the current climatic conditions of a region, the strong elevation gradients within a region, and the specific ES in question. Our simulations project that large negative impacts will occur at low and intermediate elevations in initially warm-dry regions, where relatively small climatic shifts result in negative drought-related impacts on forest ES. In contrast, at higher elevations, and in regions that are initially cool-wet, forest ES will be comparatively resistant to a 2\u00a0\u00b0C warmer world. We also found considerable variation in the vulnerability of forest ES to climate change, with some services such as protection against rockfall and avalanches being sensitive to 2\u00a0\u00b0C global climate change, but other services such as carbon storage being reasonably resistant. Although our results indicate a heterogeneous response of mountain forest ES to climate change, the projected substantial reduction of some forest ES in dry regions suggests that a 2\u00a0\u00b0C increase in global mean temperature cannot be seen as a universally 'safe' boundary for the maintenance of mountain forest
