<dc:description xmlns:ns0="xml" ns0:lang="en">When commenting on Aristotle’s discussions of the production of heat from the sphere of the Sun (Meteor. I,3 ; On the Heavens II,7), Alexander addresses the issue as to how this heat comes to the earth through spheres that are themselves not heated, and he claims that the transmission of some physical properties through an intermediary body does not imply the affection of that body. Although the importance of this model of "mediated movement" has been already recognised, there are still no studies of the relevant texts in Alexander’s Com. on Meteorologics and Simplicius’ Com. on On the Heavens – the first of which having not been translated into modern languages. I seek to compensate this lack by offering a first hand study of these documents. After having shown the conditions of the issue in Aristotle (I), I offer a close reading of these texts to specify the epistemological status of Alexander’s discussion of the transmission of celestial heat (II), and to highlight the constitutive ambiguity of his model of mediated movement (III). I suggest that this ambiguity, which concerns the condition of the intermediary, formed the background for the discussion of that kind of movement in the medieval tradition, in Arabic and in Latin.</dc:description>
