<dc:description xmlns:ns1="xml" ns1:lang="en">This study focuses on French verb alternations in which a direct object can alternate with an oblique argument, as in goûter qqch(‘taste sth’) vs. goûter à qqch(lit. ‘taste at sth’). A precise syntactic definition of these alternations is first provided, and a sample of verbs alternating between direct and oblique arguments is collected. Possible semantic counterparts of the alternation are then examined, leading to the distinction between five types of semantic effects. Finally, cases of semantic identity between alternants are examined and the motivation for their existence in the linguistic system is discussed</dc:description>
