Weichlein, Siegfried 2018 Germany chose unlike Italy in 1871 the federal model with an integrated market economy following the liberal win-win model. German federalism knew several ambiguities. These ambiguities are discussed along the lines of change and continuity, entanglement and integrity and finally nationalism and regionalism. In times of political upheaval like the “Reichsgründung” historical continuities were highly popular. The integrity of the individual Länder did not preclude their massive entanglement in networks, negotiations and transregional politics. Finally, nationalism and regionalism weren’t opposites. Rather did regionalism grow with the rise of nationalism through the rise of the Heimat idea.
