  <dc:description xmlns:ns0="xml" ns0:lang="en">The present paper deals with the role played by beards as a signifier of political power in Medieval societies. More specifically, it reconstructs the dynamics by which Byzantine emperors came to break with the centuries-old tradition of the Roman ruler's shaven look to adopt a bearded appearance, which was not without prompting reactions among their contemporaries.</dc:description>
