En effet, dans certains pays, les chiffres sur le nombre de locuteurs monolingues ou bilingues ont des conséquences politico-économiques directes, notamment dans le cadre de l’attribution de soutiens financiers aux minorités linguistiques. Les statistiques linguistiques constituent également un savoir constamment consulté – et parfois remis en question – par de nombreux scientifiques qui s’en servent pour analyser des phénomènes démographiques en lien avec les langues. Étant donné l’omniprésence des statistiques des langues dans le monde scientifique et politique, le Centre scientifique de compétences sur le plurilinguisme s’est donné la tâche d’élaborer un « State of the Art » présentant l’état de la littérature scientifique sur les recensements des langues et leurs interprétations dans l’espace social. In many multilingual societies, official statistics on language play a major role in organising linguistic space. Indeed, data on the number of monolingual or bilingual speakers can have direct political and economic consequences in some countries, particularly regarding the allocation of financial support to linguistic minorities. Language statistics also represent a body of knowledge which is consistently referred to – and sometimes called into question – by numerous scholars, who use them to analyse demographic phenomena related to languages. Given the omnipresence of language statistics in the scientific and political spheres, the Research Centre on Multilingualism has taken on the mission of developing a state-of-the-art overview of scholarly literature on language statistics and their interpretation in social spaces. In zahlreichen mehrsprachigen Gesellschaften spielen amtliche Statistiken eine massgebliche Rolle bei der Organisation von Sprachräumen. In einigen Ländern haben Angaben zur Anzahl von ein- oder zweisprachigen Sprecherinnen und Sprechern sogar direkte politische oder wirtschaftliche Konsequenzen, namentlich auf die finanzielle Unterstützung von Sprachminderheiten. Sprachenstatistiken stellen zudem ein von zahlreichen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern laufend konsultiertes – und manches Mal infrage gestelltes - Wissensreservoir für die Analyse von demografischen Phänomenen im Zusammenhang mit Sprachen dar. Angesichts der Allgegenwart von Sprachenstatistiken in Wissenschaft und Politik legt das Wissenschaftliche Kompetenzzentrum für Mehrsprachigkeit nun eine „State-of-the- Art“-Literaturübersicht zu Sprachenerhebungen und ihren gesellschaftlichen Interpretationen vor. Infatti, in alcuni paesi, le cifre sul numero di monolingui o bilingui hanno delle conseguenze politico-economiche dirette, per esempio nell’attribuzione di sovvenzioni alle minoranze linguistiche. Le statistiche linguistiche sono spesso consultate –e a volte contestate– da numerosi studiosi che se ne servono per analizzare dei fenomeni demografici collegati alle lingue.
