  <dc:description xmlns:ns0="xml" ns0:lang="en">Contrary to our German-speaking neighbor states, the issue of alphabetization of  migrants is neither specifically found in the official curriculum for language  development of migrants nor in a separate concept. Furthermore, in this area,  compared with German as a foreign or second language, only a small amount of  teaching materials can be found. In this article, Alexis Feldmeier’s Alpha-Box will be  presented and its benefits for adult literacy teaching discussed. The Alpha-Box is  characterized by a learner-centered approach and self-regulated learning – both  aspects which are central in further language courses as well as for a respectful  learning atmosphere for adults. A study comparing traditional alphabetization and  alphabetization with the Alpha-Box showed an increased motivation and an enhanced  learning success for learners being alphabetized with the Alpha-Box.</dc:description>
  <dc:description xmlns:ns1="xml" ns1:lang="de">Im Gegensatz zu unseren deutschsprachigen Nachbarstaaten ist die  Alphabetisierungsarbeit mit Migranten weder spezifisch im Rahmencurriculum noch in  einem gesonderten Konzept festgehalten. Im Vergleich zum DaF/DaZ-Unterricht kann  dafür auch auf wenig Unterrichtsmaterial zurückgegriffen werden. In diesem Artikel  wird die Alpha-Box von Alexis Feldmeier vorgestellt und ihre Vorteile für einen  erwachsenengerechten Alphabetisierungsunterricht diskutiert. Die wissenschaftliche  Auseinandersetzung mit der Alpha-Box konnte positive empirische Resultate  feststellen: Die Lernenden zeigten eine erhöhte Motivation und einen gesteigerten  Lernerfolg. Des Weiteren zeichnet sich die Alpha-Box durch Teilnehmerorientierung  und Selbststeuerung aus – beides Aspekte die für eine respektvolle Lernatmosphäre  für Erwachsene und insbesondere im weiteren Zweitsprachen-Unterricht zentral sind.</dc:description>
